Sabbath School Vision: 'Prepared For God's Return'

Beulah Plunkett

Beulah Plunkett is a former lecturer from the University of Birmingham, where she lectured in Social and Child Development Psychology before taking up her post as Sabbath School Director at the North England Conference.

Beulah has 25 years experience lecturing in Further Education and Higher Education, and has been a member of the Seventh Day Adventist church for 23 years, and a Lay preacher for 12 years.  Beulah has utilised her expertise in Teacher training and Counselling to support church members in their ministry. This is her mission as she serves the Lord.

Purpose of Sabbath School

Sabbath School is the ‘Gateway’ of the church; the first place where members and visitors learn about the love of God and the promise of the Gospel fulfilled in Christ our Saviour. Church is the place where we gather to worship and to learn to become Disciples of Christ. It is the place where we are to be nurtured, trained, and prepared for our ministry.

Our ministry is to fulfil the ‘gospel commission’, ‘Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit…’(Matt. 28:19). To fulfil this commission we need to study God’s word individually and collectively. Sabbath School is the place for collective Bible study. My prayer is that we will all continue to study God’s word, to attend Sabbath School and continue to be ‘doers of the word’ thus fulfilling God’s purpose for the church. My promise is to work with everyone to ensure that the Sabbath School fulfils its purpose to support and realizes the gospel commission.

Role of the Sabbath School Director

My overall responsibility as Adult Sabbath School Director is to further develop the Adult Sabbath School within the North England Conference (this also includes young adults), building on the good work that has been done so far and working in line with the BUC, TED and GC Sabbath School Directors.

  1. To advise the President and the Executive Committee on Adult Sabbath School activities.
  2. To serve as a Consultant to the Adult Sabbath School Superintendents and Teachers across the North England Conference.
  3. To organise and facilitate training for Adult Sabbath School Superintendents and Teachers across the North England Conference.
  4. To support the development of resources to meet the learning needs of the Adult Sabbath School members, including visitors and those preparing for baptism.
  5. To encourage the realization of the four goals of Sabbath School: 'fellowship development, community outreach, Bible study, and foreign mission’.
  6. To work with the Pastors in developing the Adult Sabbath School.
  7. To liase and work with the GC, TED and BUC Adult Sabbath School Directors.
