Welcome
to Issue 67, 1st April 2010
This weekend the Christian world celebrates
Easter. Though the word does not appear in the New Testament and has
its origin in the Anglo-Saxon word Eostre, honouring the goddess of
spring, its use has come to be associated with the crucifixion
and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The crucifixion and resurrection of
Christ were the foundational events authenticating who Christ truly was
and for the establishment of the Christian faith. The early disciples
did place great emphasis on the resurrection of Jesus but we nowhere,
have a biblical precedent for treating the days surrounding his death
as holy time or a special day of celebration. Following the Bible, the
only holy day we honour is the seventh-day Sabbath. For this reason
Seventh-day Adventists have never given the attention to Easter that
other churches do.
However in our hedonistic and religiously hostile age, Christians have
a duty to use every tool in its armoury to spread the news that life at
its fullest can only be found in Jesus Christ. We live in a society
saturated with celebration of Easter. In an effort to convey the idea
that Adventists are believers in the resurrection, some congregations
have introduced Easter observances.
This is a time of year when many people become open to special studies
in the Bible. An opportunity opens to reach out to the public with the
fuller message of Christ, often with good response. Under such
circumstances Easter and its surrounding events can lend themselves to
evangelistic outreach without, however, assigning any special religious
meaning to the day itself. Whenever there is opportunity to advance the
message of Christ without compromising Biblical truth, the "wise as
serpents, harmless as doves" counsel of Christ is appropriate.
Christ
died for our sins! Christ is Risen! Christ is Alive, spread the good
news!

The aim of the annual appeal is not just to raise money but also to
meet people and perhaps start to develop a relationship. How about
visiting each of the 40 doors either side of your house with your tin,
your smile and your short prepared talk?
“Good evening, I’m
collecting for ADRA, a development and
relief charity. I support them every year. Would you like to help us
help
others?”
“Simple”
– as the advert says.

Sandra felt as low as the heels of her shoes
when she pulled open the florist shop door, against a November gust of
wind. Her life had been as sweet as a spring breeze and then, in the
fourth month of her second pregnancy, a "minor" automobile accident
stole her joy...
